This is quiche:

This is what I thought was quiche:

This is actually kiszka, pronounced keesh-ka. A traditional Polish blood sausage (yes, you heard me right – blood, as in let’s make use of EVERY part of the animal, blood). Kiszka is made of pig’s blood and kasza, a type of buckwheat. The mere thought of kiszka makes my stomach churn, and now as an added bonus I have a picture of it emblazoned on my blog. All to explain a simple language mixup.
So, sound it out… Quiche (keesh) and Kiszka (keesh-ka). The “ka” on the end made me think that the Polish people just pronounced it slightly differently, and that the Americans thought of a cool way to spell it in order to make it somehow more appetizing. But HAHA, I wasn’t fooled for one second! Quiche indeed!
Every time I went out for breakfast somewhere, I would see quiche on the menu. Never once did I have the thought that it might be something other than blood sausage. Quiche Lorraine = Blood Sausage Lorraine, Spinach Quiche = Blood sausage with Spinach, you get the drift.
Until one day, my love affair with quiche began. I found scrambled eggs in a pie crust at a friend’s party. Heaven! I asked my friend what was this amazing breakfast-like delicacy. She looked at me like I wasn’t serious – “Um, Quiche appetizers?” Turning bright red, it was then that I realized the error of my ways and realized that my bilingual brain had made a fubar - for almost thirty years!
So, today I made my first quiche. It was divine, delicious, and surprisingly very easy to make. I can’t believe I have been quiche-less for so long. I plan on making it very often from now on… I have 30 years of catching up to do!

How funny! I don’t blame you for staying away from what you thought was blood sausage. Ick!
I tried my first quiche and crepes for the first time about a year ago. No reason, I’d just never had them.
They were heavenly!

i love quiche. i hate blood sausage. but…we (the jewish people)have something called kischka, too. it’s some yummy starch thing wrapped in something like cow intestinal lining. some people put gravy on it. it’s one of my favorite jewish delicacies!

Wow. Welcome to the world of quiche! Not to be too scary, but you could actually make a blood sausage quiche if you had your Polish relatives in town (but please, don’t.) I have to admit to having put leftover brats in a quiche; it was actually delicious! Enjoy!~
