My son is a very heavy sleeper, and has a thing about holding his poop until he goes to bed. At first I tried pull-ups at night and at naptime, and after about two weeks of changing his sheets every morning and afternoon due to poop blowouts or a soaking wet bed, I decided to go back to night-time diapers, Huggies Overnites to be exact.
Well, this has been working for the most part, but I am tired of diapers at night. Especially after this morning.
This morning my son decided to do his ritualistic poop in the diaper, but he also made his mind up that he wasn’t going to wake me this morning and wait for me to come in and change him. He decided to remove his poopy diaper himself and proceeded to discard the evidence… down the air conditioning vent! Upon entering his room I was hit by the smell of poop, and saw my son sitting on his bed surrounded by poop. GAG!
There was poop on the bed and on the carpet, and upon closer inspection I saw that most of the disgusting stinky had been crudely stuffed down the air conditioning vent. Dude, so not the way to start a Monday morning!
I am so done with this pooping in the diaper thing! I have tried rewards, bribes, treats, positive reinforcement, and even prunes to try and make him go before bedtime in the potty. When I ask him where poop should go, he proudly says “in the potty.” I know he gets it, but damn… I need help with this one.
So, I ask you… any advice for a mother tired of changing a three year old’s poopy diapers? Should I try underwear at night and cross my fingers that he doesn’t do the deed in his Lightning McQueen briefs and all over his Micky Mouse bed? Or do I try pullups again? Or should I put the pullups on over the underwear in the hopes that the feel of the underwear on his skin will be a clue to him not to let loose overnight? Or do you think he just needs to get a little older to truly comprehend the “we don’t poop in our bed” concept?
Dude, I so need help with this one…

My only advice (and this is slim advice considering my girl was almost 4 by the time she potty trained) is to BRIBE and BRIBE and BRIBE him to poo before going to bed.
Or, give him away.

Oh boy! What Angie said - bribe as if your life depended on it. Because it kind of does. The AC Vent??? That pretty much means the rest of the house is pretty much infused with pooppurri now isn’t it?

Oh no.
Happy Monday to you. Yuck!
Lola was out of diapers on her 2nd birthday. She slept in a diaper until her 4th birthday.
Do not take off that diaper at night. Seriously. He will just “grow out of it” and figure it out. Lola is a HEAVY sleeper… I tried to let her go w/o diapers but always was doing the laundry,
It isn’t worth it. Keep it on.
Put on a pair of underwear, pants, and tape it on.
Just my two cents.
I hate doing laundry.

Not sure what help I am since you’re way ahead of me on the daytime thing, but you have an edge in at least knowing WHEN he goes. If he’s asleep, it could be an anxiety issue. He relaxes enough then just goes.
You could just make him sit on the potty at night until he does something in it. But again… not sure I should be giving out advice. I’ve gotten 3 out of diapers successfully and each time it’s been different.

I agree with OHmommy. Tape the diaper on him if you have to. Duct tape works great. Just cut it off him in the morning.

I can’t offer advice, but I will share something humorous a friend did: she put duct tape on her twins’ diapers at night so they couldn’t pull them off!

I can’t give you any help here… my boy wasn’t completely potty trained (poop anyways) until he was about four. We tried everything too. We stayed with the overnite that whole time. Good luck!

Oh girl, I am on kid #4 and yanno I thought I had this potty training thing FIGURED. OUT. with #1 and #2. My oldest even regressed at 3 and we had to start. all. over. again.
Enter #3 - he is on the spectrum, almost non-verbal, is a bit OCD and didn’t “get” the pee thing until about 3.5 and now at 5, he still doesn’t poop in the potty. He has pooped on the potty like 3 times? He understands it, he just WON’T do it.
Two weeks away from school starting and he will poop anywhere other than the potty, including the floor…
Sigh. I know what you are going through. I so get it!

That stinks - no pun intended! I’ve never had this exact situation, and I’m sure you’ve tried bribes….but maybe think of a super, super bribe. Something that would make him drool. Then make a sticker chart….every time he stays poop-free at night, he gets a sticker. Also, does he do it right before he wakes up or right after he wakes up? Could you wake him 5 minutes earlier & stick him on the pot?
So sorry. That is beyond disgusting & had my gag reflex going too! Good luck!

Ugh, erg, agg! That’s the sound of me gagging with you.
I wish I had any advice or tips. My oldest did the same thing for a while too. Naptime was when he would finally give in, so after every nap I had an extra full poop diaper to care for. The only thing that worked was time, he just outgrew it on his own.
I hope your’s outgrows this phase soon!

I would just try leaving the diaper on at night. He probably needs to be a little bit older before he understands the concept between potty training.
